Anyone who has traveled by themselves knows it’s an exhilarating, challenging, and rewarding experience. Why I travel solo – and why you should too!
It’s also surprisingly common! Nearly 50% of US adults have traveled alone at some point in their lives, according to the Center for Creative Leadership. And while solo travel can be exciting, it’s also a great way to meet other travelers, both solo and in groups, as well as locals eager to show off their country’s best spots and hidden gems.
Here are just a few reasons why I travel solo and why you should too!
1) The Life Benefits of Solo Travel
If you haven’t traveled alone, it might seem like a risk. But it can be incredibly rewarding—in a host of ways. Here are five benefits of traveling alone:
1) You get to know yourself better.
2) You’ll become more confident, which will make future travels even more enriching.
3) Traveling on your own allows you to experiment with new hobbies and activities that you may not have otherwise done.
Pack light (and download a packing list)
The less stuff you bring, the less trouble you’ll have traveling. This especially goes for long-term travelers. I often meet people who think they need to bring their entire wardrobe on a trip, but in reality, most of us only wear about 30% of our clothes on any given day.
That’s not to say you can’t bring nice things — just remember that pack light, especially when traveling for extended periods of time.
Stay in hostels (and book early)
Hostels are often cheaper than hotels, so if you’re traveling on a budget, it’s a good idea to stay in hostels. Plus, they offer free amenities such as Wi-Fi, laundry services, and private rooms that can help make your solo trip feel less lonely.
To make sure you find a room when booking hostels online, always book early—the earlier in advance (up to three months), the better!
Book tours (and meet other travelers)
One of my favorite ways to meet people when traveling is by taking a book tour around town. Nearly every city has them, and they usually involve reading a few pages out loud in exchange for free food or drinks. This can help make your trip even more authentic (if that’s what you’re looking for) while allowing you to meet some new people along the way.
I love these book tours not only because they force me to get outside of my comfort zone, but also because most hostels offer them (which is where most backpackers stay). So if you aren’t sure about going on your own, check with your hostel first to see if they have anything going on during your stay.
Keep an open mind (and use Google Translate!)
Solo travel used to be a bit of a taboo, but nowadays it’s more socially acceptable. That said, a lot of folks still aren’t sure if they would enjoy traveling alone or if they should try it for themselves.
If you’re thinking about taking a solo trip, there are several things to consider: location (what country do you want to visit?), duration (for how long do you want to go?), logistics (where will you stay? what mode of transportation will get you from place to place?) and cost (how much money do you have saved up for your trip?).
Keep an open mind as far as location is concerned – in my experience, anywhere on earth can be great!
Research your destination (and pick the right time to go!)
Research your destination before traveling there so that you know what to expect, or ask a friend or family member who’s been there recently.
Make sure you pick a good time to go (hint: avoid holidays). If these details make it easier for you to plan, it will also help make your trip smoother.
Once on location, don’t be afraid to try something new or unusual—you never know what might be fun until you try it!
Wear sunscreen
For a lot of people, it’s hard to leave their comfort zone. Many people are nervous about traveling on their own, especially if they feel like their only companion will be their backpack.
But there’s no need to worry; whether you’re traveling in a group or by yourself, being prepared makes all of these trips safer and more enjoyable.
Book train tickets in advance
Advance train tickets are not just cheaper, but they can also give you a more comfortable journey. Booking in advance gives you peace of mind that once your tickets are booked, there’s no danger of anyone else taking them (and possibly selling them on at a higher price).
Advance ticketing means you can be sure of your seat number, so less chance of being pushed around by others.
Read local blogs
If you’re headed somewhere for vacation, check out blogs from locals to get a feel for places that are off-the-beaten-path. Sometimes, touristy means crowding.
And off-the-beaten path might be in your backyard. There are local gems even in our own cities; sometimes it takes someone who knows their city well to find them—and share them with others. Why not write about it?
