Planning the journey
One of my favorite things about family travel is figuring out how to make each journey enjoyable for everyone in our group. There’s always at least one grumpy person on our trips, and planning ahead can keep tensions low and smiles high.
For example, as we planned a recent road trip from New York City to Boston, we decided that music would be one of our best sources of happiness while driving through rural New England.
Stay fit on vacation
So you want to take a vacation, but don’t want to lose any of that hard-earned muscle. No problem. There are many ways that you can stay fit while still enjoying yourself on vacation.
It’s important to be realistic about what is possible during your trip, however. If it will require too much extra effort and expense, then just accept that you won’t be able to keep up with your normal routine and plan accordingly.
Consider safety
One of parents’ greatest concerns when it comes to family travel is ensuring safety. They want their children to be safe in every way—physically, emotionally, and intellectually. So what should you do? Teach kids that just as they can make good choices at home, they need to make good choices on vacation too. Use these tips for keeping kids safe while traveling.
Stay cool in crowded places
When travelling with family, heat and humidity can be a big problem. If you’re vacationing in high temperatures, plan for plenty of indoor activities for kids or turn up the air conditioning when outside. Consider renting movies or taking an Uber if you need a break from walking or hiking.
Wearing lighter clothing and keeping hydrated is also important during family travels .
Keep everyone happy on long journeys
Kids get bored, parents get tired, people want to stop and eat or stop for a drink. If you can’t agree on where you’re going or when you’ll be there, a road trip can quickly turn into a nightmare for everyone involved.
To keep everyone happy on long journeys it’s best to have several activities available that people can choose from as they become weary of one thing and crave another.
Pack Right
The key to successful family travel is a well-packed bag. In fact, depending on where you’re going, even a well-packed bag may not be enough. Before heading out on your next vacation, make sure you know exactly what kind of weather you can expect.
You may want a coat or scarf for every day of your trip or just one for emergencies; in either case, pack it appropriately and plan for all possible contingencies.
Choose activities based on their needs and interests.
Just because you want to see a specific attraction doesn’t mean everyone else in your family will be interested. To help ensure that each member of your clan has a fun time during your travels, choose activities based on their needs and interests—and plan ahead when you can.
